Concealed Carry: Training Courses for Applicants

At this point in time 48 states in the United States have concealed carry laws on the books. In this regard, some of the states that have enacted concealed carry laws require private citizens to obtain training before they will qualify to obtain a permit for concealed carry. The minimum type of training that those states that do have such an educational requirement is training in the classroom in advance of getting a concealed carry permit. These classes focuses on the fact that even if a gun or other weapon is used in self defense, there can be some significant liability to the concealed carry shooter.

When it comes to the liability issue, some states have provided some sense of immunity associated with a private citizen who has a concealed carry permit. In this regard if the citizen shoots his or her weapon, and the shooting is deemed to be justified - for example, done in self defense - that individual will have at least immunity to some extent should he or she end up being sued by the individual he or she shot or, if the person was killed, the surviving family members. Again, in order for immunity to attach, it is necessary that the shooting itself by the person with a concealed carry permit be considered to be legally justified.

Other elements of the classroom element of concealed carry training involves firearm mechanics, safety issues, home defense, resolving confrontational situations as well as practicing handling a weapon or gun without actually using or firing that weapon or gun.

Some states actually also require a person to have training shooting a gun before he or she will be granted a concealed carry permit. These individuals will undertake this training normally on a shooting range. The key to this type of training is to assist people in learning how to shoot safely.
